Ray Eames (1912-1988) 原名 Bernice “Ray” Alexandra Kaiser，極受父母影響，從幼接觸大自然，包括住在加利福尼亞州薩克拉門托城外平房、玩自製玩具等，從中享自然優遊的高尚價值。高中畢業後，師承抽象表現畫家 Hans Hofmann，並於1936年創立美國抽象學藝術家群組（該組織亦運行至今）。
1940年，Ray 經一名建築師友人 Ben Baldwin 介紹，入讀 Charles Eames 的 Cranbrook Academy of Art，修其他藝術範疇。恰恰，當時受聘擔任紐約現代美術博物館的“Organic Design in Home Furnishings”展覽工作，邂逅 Charles Eames。翌年，Charles 與妻子 Catherine 離婚，迎娶 Ray。自此，他倆便成絕配，成後世境景仰的設計二人配。

1948年，Charles 及 Ray 倆參加紐約現代美術博物館的“International Competition for Low-cost Furniture Design”比賽。設計概念簡單得很，就是想令 Gaston Lachaise 的「漂浮中的人像雕塑」(Floating Figure）平穩安放椅子其中。該雕塑仍是身材豐滿的祼體女性，像橫坐一般的漂浮於水面上。要安放該雕塑為概念，必須像雕塑般的坐姿橫坐舒適，所以最終設計一張長休閒椅，亦語帶相關地取名法文 Chaise Longue “La Chaise”，向 Gaston Lachaise 致敬。考慮到不能用他倆善長的木材塑造技術，造成極大曲面的坐位，只能再研究另一種嶄新塑型技術。

當時，已開始盛行的玻璃纖維技術，他倆便最終成功利用玻璃纖維塑造薄薄的上下兩層坐位部件，利用小硬膠片分隔上下部件，然後黏合並留有中間空隙，最後注入苯乙稀，完美完成雕塑般的休閒椅。不過，看來這麼複雜製作工序的休閒椅，又怎能贏取「低成本傢具設計獎」呢？最終，他倆設計的另一個設計椅子“DAX”，獲得第二名，而“La Chaise”想當然名落孫山。即使不能貼題獲獎，完美的經典傑作又怎會淹沒於三千個競賽作品中，“La Chaise”休閒椅最終收納入展覽優異作品及場刊之中。
1996年，Charles 及 Ray 倆設計的第一張玻璃纖維椅子，最終由 Vitra 量產，得以令這張標誌性有機設計椅子成為收藏家首選！
